A Dream Deferred – Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore–
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over–
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
There have been times in my life
when I have wanted to give up on my pursuit of Gods plans for my life. My goals cast to the side, dreams deferred, and ambitions reserved for later. Whether it is God’s plan for my personal life or professional career and business, there have been moments where I pause to consider the act of continuing down the path He has laid out for me. Sometimes the path feels too complicated, sometimes too long, sometimes the next turn in the journey of life came too soon. Regardless of the reason, there are these moments where doubt and confusion step in and try to steal my destiny.
REVIEW
When you have moments of doubt, take out your business plan and review it. Let the words sink down into your mind again. Let God bring everything back to your remembrance (John 14:26 KJV), so you can look through the steps in your plan and find your place in the process. Consider the business plan a written reminder of the future.
REMEMBER
Don’t forget what you have done to get to where you are now. A journey has multiple destinations and we can not solely ignite the fire of ambition by looking at the future. It is also important to take a look at the past and remind ourselves of the successful moves we have made thus far. God has been with us the entire way, and like Moses, he has made a way for us through our wilderness moments (Deut 8:2 KJV).
PRESS
The Bible says that we should PRESS towards the mark for the high calling in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:14 KJV). I think that passage applies to all aspects of our lives. It does not say walk to the mark, the Bible says press. This gives me the impression that we have to work to reach our goals. There may be obstacles and walls along the way, but if we press forward, we will reach the final destination.
Keep dreaming, and don’t let your dreams dry up like a raisin in the sun or explode!… God has much better plans for those dreams.
