In day 3 we discussed, identifying what is in your hand, and established that God is calling our gifts, talents, abilities, ambitions, and business’ into to forefront of our makeovers. At the very beginning of our day 4 discussion, we find God telling Moses’, to cast down his staff.
“And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. – Exodus 4:3 KJV
I know, your reaction is “Say What?” Didn’t we just establish that Moses staff was symbolic of what God wanted to use? My response is yes, but not yet. Bare with me for a few moments, and I promise it will make perfect sense at the end of today’s post.
The Power is in the Casting
God followed Moses’ casting down of his staff with 3 miracles, that would verify Moses was sent by God. The fact that God had an Uncle Sam styled, “I Want You” dialogue going with Moses, caused him a bit of stress. Put yourself in the story, how would you feel? Nervous? Excited? Terrified? This is how Moses responded.
But Moses pleaded with the Lord, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.” Then the Lord asked Moses, “Who makes a person’s mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.” But Moses again pleaded, “Lord, please! Send anyone else. – Exodus 4:10 – 12 NLT
I believe, the anxious response Moses experienced, is the exact reaction most believers would have also. He totally overlooked the fact, that God would be with him every step of the way, and brought his own inadequacies, to the forefront. So if this a normal reaction, what can I do to overcome this barrier in my company? I believe the power is in the casting. The scriptures give us invaluable insight into how to overcome these anxious moments.
First, give your anxieties to God. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. – 1 Peter 5:7 NLT. Be honest about your fears and anxieties. Naturally, releasing those areas of your life that you find as strengths, will cause you to be a bit nervous. However, if you are going to do God’s work, it can’t be in your own strength. It is going to take God’s strength. This was what Moses was experiencing when he cast down his staff. Talk about being vulnerable.
Second, Pray. Third, Present. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. As the Story continues, God convinces Moses to go and do His will. Moses, gathered his family, and set out, with “God’s Staff”
So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back to the land of Egypt. In his hand he carried the staff of God. – Exodus 4:20
Exodus 4:20 is the first time the Staff is mentioned as belonging to God. The act of casting gave God ownership. Decide today, to cast your staff into God’s capable hands. Develop a lifestyle of taking all your cares to him, because He truly cares for you.
