5 Days to a Total Business Makeover: Day 1

Christian Business NetworkDo you actively seek God’s purpose for your life, and desire to make a real difference in the world, through business? Is that desire, a reality? I would like to share with you 5 truths in 5 days from God’s word that will reveal how Christian businesses can do great things, while bringing God glory. One of the most recognized accounts in Biblical history, gives us insight into how God chooses to impact the lives of his people. In the book of Exodus, God met Moses, a shepherd by trade, while he was engaging in his enterprise. God revealed Himself, and his plan to Moses from within a burning bush. The scriptures teach that Moses turned aside to see what was happening. In the next moments Moses took time to pause, and his life was forever changed.

Exodus 3:1-4

1Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

2And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

All to often, the reality of Christians in business is we don’t have time to pause, and see that God has great things in store for us daily. It’s totally understandable, and I fall into this very trap myself at times. Our minds tend to race 100 miles an hour, so that we can obtain success in our respective fields, and the notion of slowing down seems counter intuitive, when it comes to getting more accomplished. Well here is a novel idea, God wants to use your business as a vehicle to bring change in the the world. If we don’t slow down to see the burning bush moments of life, we will miss out on divine opportunities to see the realization of the Kingdom of God, on earth.

Now that your curiosity is peaked you may be wondering, “How on earth can God use my business to bring change”? God wants the focal point of our daily activities to be wrapped around doing his will. You know… the whole, “Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, and loving your neighbor as yourself” thing. If your heart is heavy, overworked and burdened with other things, then those two commandments, tend to become secondary in our lives. In Moses’ case, he wanted to do God’s work, he just was impatient, and got ahead of God’s plan with his own. That’s the whole reason he ended up being a shepherd in the first place. (But that’s a different story for a different time.)

God set a bush ablaze to grab Moses’ attention, yet Moses had to make a conscious decision to take a closer look. Are there any burning bushes, in your life, that you are to busy to investigate?

And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. – Exodus 3:3

It was only after Moses decided to turn aside that God began a dialog with Moses, that would turn Moses from a manager of sheep, to an advocate, and manager of God’s people.

And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. – Exodus 3:4

Day 1: Make Time to Pause
I know as a business owner or someone with the ambition of becoming one, it is difficult to take time from the things you need to accomplish on a daily basis. Note however, I didn’t say take time, I said, “Make Time“. Day 1 holds the first step which is the most vital in the process. Pause to see what God is up to. Settle it in your heart that you will carve out time daily, to seek God’s face.

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming.” – Psalm 27:8 (New Living Translation)

My Prayer for More Than A Company readers is that the Lord give us the strength and ability to pause, in the midst of our busy lives, because we want to hear him call us by name. Come back tomorrow for day two, as we evaluate the next step in our Total Impact Business Makeover.
